treenew
Sponsored by Agora Publishing
The concept for the design of my banner involves a simple and bold word play and visual image: The word “treenew” is a play on the word “renew,” as in “renew the face of the earth” by planting trees = treenew. The visual image continues the concept by using a shade tree held in the palm of a hand to represent the message: We hold the answer to renewing (or reforesting) the earth in our own hands.
In many ways, for me personally, this project comes full circle back to my academic training as a graphic artist early in my career. I have since gone on to specialize in Landscape Architecture and Environmental Studies and am currently employed by Baltimore County Dept. of Environmental Protection & Resource Management to coordinate their effort to increase the urban tree canopy in the area through the Growing Home Campaign. This is an innovative market-based partnership with local retail nurseries to encourage homeowners to plant trees in their yards, by offering comprehensive education about trees and a cash incentive in the form of a $10 tree coupon.
