Trees Help Baltimore Breathe
Sponsored by CN8 The Comcast Network
The idea behind this concept was to convey the message that cities are living organisms, and trees are “vital organs” of the city. Trees are the “lungs” of a city. Not only do they produce oxygen and sequester carbon dioxide but they also help filter pollution out of the air. They provide shade and help reduce the urban “heat island” effect ? in essence trees work to cool down the city and the air we breathe.
Not only does this make the city more comfortable for us it also helps us save energy in air conditioning costs. After storms and heavy rains trees help soak up storm water runoff that would otherwise carry all kinds of pollutants right into the Inner Harbor and Chesapeake Bay. So not only do they clean the air – but the water as well.
We need to think of our city as a living organism. Complete with all of the bodily functions that any living organism has. Trees are a vital part of a city’s life system. In order for a city to be healthy, it needs trees.
