Sustainability refers to the potential longevity of vital human ecological support systems. This concept questions what we view as vital resources. Milled wood, coal, iron, etc. are vital to sustain life in today’s society of technology and disposable goods. However, to continue the growth and natural production of these resources, it is vital to the environment for us not to mill them. I believe there will come a day when we may have to choose in order to sustain our own lives.

I was struck with this thought on a recent trip to West Virginia. While enjoying the scenic drive, around a corner stood a massive coal milling plant. With it’s tall smokestacks and lava-like fire spewing out of the vents in the middle of a peaceful forest, I couldn’t help but realize the grueling reality of our comfortable lives. The design of the banner shows the cold reality of industrialization against the whimsical perfection of nature.
