Patricia Look

In a consumer–driven nation, people do not pay enough attention to what they are consuming. It is not just the products on store shelves, but also our world and our natural environment. In a push for environmental awareness, this banner attempts to raise awareness of, in particular, our nation’s tendency to be wasteful. We get caught up with selfish everyday acts, may it be throwing our newspapers in the trash or opting to use paper towels instead of air hand-dryers in the bathroom, and we do not realize that we are the cause of a growing environmental problem.

Depicted in this banner is a vibrant, green tree disintegrating into bits of dull, lifeless paper and ash. The base of the tree is jagged in the shape of Baltimore’s cityscape suggesting that the bottom line is that the environmental problem is in our hands. An issue not just in need of a solution from our country’s leaders, but from each city in the United States and each person within these cities. This banner along with other banners of the Urban Forest Project will help educate Baltimore that ignorance has a cost. The environmental problem cannot simply be ignored or else we will deplete our natural resources in forests.
